According to a recent report by Interaksyon, French multinational game developer Ubisoft is looking forward to opening a gaming studio in the Philippines around the second quarter of the year.
The company plans to hire 50 people initially to fill up the positions of artists, designers, programmers, and project managers. These employees will be focusing on developing AAA console games.
Chip Go, who is originally from Cagayan De Oro, will be working as the studio manager for Ubisoft Philippines. Go has previously worked with the company for Assassin’s Creed and Ghost Recon.
Go remarked:
“I am very excited to have the opportunity to come back to my country of origin to kick start a brand new studio for Ubisoft. Every day, Filipinos leave the country in search of opportunities elsewhere. I was one of those people eight years ago, and now I’m very happy to come back and bring my own experience in AAA game development. I know that this experience, as well as Ubisoft’s 30 years of industry experience, is going to spark great things, and is a huge opportunity for the Philippines.”
Meanwhile, Olivier de Rotalier, managing director of Ubisoft Singapore, Chengdu, and the Philippines, pointed out that they picked the Philippines “because of its great talent pool.”
“I am confident that the new studio will meet our demanding standards,” added Rotalier.
The studio will be linked with the South East Asian hub in Singapore and the founding team members will be providing training for the new team.
“Our number one priority will be to develop the high potential of our new team members to reach the level of expertise and quality needed to work on AAA games, just as we have previously done in Singapore,” said Rotalier.
Ubisoft’s Philippine studio will be located on the De La Salle University campus in Santa Rosa, Laguna.
According to Go:
“It’s important for Ubisoft to provide a friendly working environment for its staff. Locating our studio in Santa Rosa is a real advantage in this sense. We have huge ambition for this team, who will play a part in creating some of Ubisoft’s biggest and most beloved games.”
Currently, Ubisoft is considered the world’s third largest game producer following Activision and Blizzard. This marks the first time that a foreign multinational game developer has chosen to establish a studio in the Philippines.
